Chiefs the pace-setters, but Crusaders are still the team to beat

There's no doubt about it. The Chiefs are on a mission in 2012. Head coach Dave Rennie has galvanised a previously flagging franchise since his appointment as top dog. His assistant Wayne Smith also didn't snub a lucrative contract offer from England just to be Super Rugby challengers. Winning is everything and that attitude is dripping down to the players.

Compare there work-rate in defence to that of the Blues this season and it's like they are playing a different sport, let alone competing in the same conference! Maybe that's just a sad indictment on how poor the Blues have been though (another story altogether).

Chiefs want to create a dynasty

It's not just tactically that the Chiefs have been doing the business. Smith in particular has been fabulous in assuring fans that the Chiefs are not just a Waikato team but represent all the other provinces in the greater region. So much so that he commented on his own blog on 'the Rugby Site', when a ghost writer failed to include the likes of Bay of Plenty, Counties Manukau, Thames Valley and King Country, even though Smith himself had made it clear. How many other coaches could you imagine doing that? Clearly Smith has a strategy for progression and a strong passion to create a culture around the franchise, which perhaps previously they lacked.

Rennie and Smith: a happy couple
Together, Rennie and Smith have said that they want to make the Chiefs as identifiable with success as Smith's old side the Crusaders have been over the last decade. It's a pretty bold statement of intent. The Crusaders have had seven successes and multiple final appearances since Supr Rugby;'s inception. The Chiefs have zip, and were hammered by the Bulls in their solitary final appearance under Ian Foster. You've got to commend them for their aspirations though.

They've done a fine job so far, turning a side notorious for a leaky defence into one of the toughest, meanest and most structured sides in the competition. What once was a team of indiciduls seems like a collective. Add in the x-factor of the likes of off-season recruit Sonny Bill Williams at centre, the new found assuredness of New Zealand's next best flyhalf Aaron Cruden and the emergence of talented youngsters Brodie Retallick and Sam Cane and you've got pretty useful side. At this time, no one can deny the fact that the Chiefs deserve their top spot in the league.

Crusaders getting their mojo back

If only it were that easy though. As well as the Chiefs have performed, Super Rugby also requires you to time your run of form for the play-offs if you want to take home the ultimate crown. That's something which the Crusaders do beautifully and 'quelle surprise', they're at it again.

After having the pleasure of watching them over the last two rounds, the signs are definitely ominous for every other rival in the competition...even the Chiefs. A few weeks ago the Crusaders surprisingly lost to the Melbourne Rebels and pundits were questioning whether they had finally lost their aura. Little did they know that the Crusaders were about to inflict two of the most dominant performances of the season. All it took was to return the world's best fly half to his number 10 shirt. Who'd have thought it? It's no slight on Tom Taylor, who had performed admirably, but the Crusaders look like a well oiled machine again with Carter at the helm.

Guildford making a run for AB's wing
First of all the Crusaders walloped the Blues 59-12 and then went on to thump a traditional bogey team of the last few years, the Highlanders (a side also fighting for a play-off spot by the way), by 51 points to 18. Did I mention that the Highlanders had beaten the Blues and Bulls in the previous two rounds? The Crusader's returning All Blacks seem to be getting a roll on, and it's a great sight seeing the likes of Dagg, Guildford, Carter, Fruean and Ellis capitalising on the donkey work done by their irrepressible pack. As a side note...how well has Luke Romano played since his call-up to the All Blacks?

2012 has been a season full of surprises, but one thing always remains the same. If you want to win the Super 15, you're gonna have to get past a certain team from Cantebury along the way (as the Reds proved last year). The Chiefs may be this season's pace-setters, but the Crusaders are still the team to beat. Would you bet against them?

Who do you think will win this year's Super 15?

  1. Nice article. I just watched the game between Chiefs and Blues - very intense! Hopefully the Blues have just stepped up since they got thrashed by the Crusaders. If not, then the Chiefs may come off second best when the play the Crusaders. Crusaders looking in very ominous form now.

By the way, good pick up on that rugby site article. I think I read it before they made that correction.

    1. Very intense. I think the Chiefs made it un-necessarily hard on themselves with indiscipline though. 2 yellow cards...20 minutes down a man... and you are more or less guaranteed to leak a few points. Cruden steered the ship particularly well though and his kicking game out of hand and off the tee has come on leaps and bounds since last year.

The Blues were fare more competitive than last week against the Crusaders though. Francis Saili looks a real prospect and it was sad to see him go off injured. I would like to see more of him before the season ends. Rene Ranger was explosive too.

  2. That new Blues centre is one to watch.

Brain explosion from Fitzgerald. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he never played for Rennie again, considering how hard it has been for Fritz Lee to get another chance.

    1. To be honest Fitzgerald was propbably only playing because of rotation policy but I agree that he probablyt won't be trusted again this season. If you consider that he was white carded too, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he could be banned for a while anyway!
